The Centennial books have arrived! The plan was to have them available for pick-up this  weekend at the Opening Regatta, which of course is now postponed until June 6-7. So, to keep on schedule (and get the books out of my living room):

I will be in the parking lot of Gulfport Yacht Club on Monday, May 4, from 10:00 until 11:00am. To the west of me I have books for clubs or individuals which need to go to: Gulfport, Pass Christian, Bay-Waveland, Singing River, Biloxi, Jackson, Lake Arthur, New Orleans, Pontchartrain, Houston and Lakewood. Books for SYC were drop shipped to SYC (because there were so many). SYC members will receive an email from SYC indicating when those books may be picked up.

I will be in the parking lot of Pensacola Yacht Club on Tuesday, May 5, from10:00 until 11:00am. To the east of me I have books for club or individuals which need to go to: Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Navy YC Pensacola, Fort Walton and St. Andrews.

If you (individual or club) want to pick up your book(s) at one of the above dates/times, please CONTACT ME no later than Sunday evening (251-895-zero nine nine three, or cbook@gya.org) to let me know; otherwise I won’t load them in my vehicle for delivery only to have to unload them when I return home. If a club plans to send someone to pick up books, I would appreciate knowing who that individual will be. You will be required to sign for picked up books!

Books not picked up will be available at the Opening Regatta in June.

There are a few books still available at $60/book – cash or check only!  If you have not purchased a book but would like to, let me know and I’ll take extras to GYC and PYC, and will have any unsold books at the Opening Regatta and the Lipton Challenge.

The Executive Committee of the Gulf Yachting Association, in response to the expectation of Government restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic possibly continuing into May, announces that the 2020 Annual Meeting and Opening Regatta shall be postponed.  A tentative new date being considered is June 5-7, 2020, with St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club remaining as the host club.  The Executive Committee would like to request each club GYA Coordinator relay this announcement to their club’s Capdevielle sailing teams.

The health and well-being of you, your family, and your club members are the most important things to consider during this time.  The Executive Committee will make additional announcements as conditions progress.

The commemorative book, as part of the GYA and Lipton Challenge centennials, is now with the publisher. The book is 9×12”, 160-pages (possibly 176 pages), hard cover with a dust jacket. Only 500 books were ordered and a limited number are still available for purchase. The cost is $60 per book. To pre-order/purchase a book, complete this form. The books will be available for pick-up at the GYA Opening Regatta at St. Andrews Bay and at the centennial celebration at Southern YC Labor Day weekend 2020.

A few clubs pre-purchased books and members of those clubs may reserve their book through their club. Those clubs are:  Gulfport (10 books), Fairhope (30 books), Fort Walton (10 books), Southern (25 books), New Orleans (10 books), Pass Christian (25 books), Pensacola (30 books), and Pontchartrain (28 books).

Application to Compete

We are rapidly approaching the deadline to submit to the publisher the draft of the commemorative book.  Over the last few months there have been people who’ve said to me “I need to send you …”  Photos should be 300dpi or better, .jpg or .tiff  “Thumbnail” photos are not at all acceptable as there is nothing I can do with a ‘thumbnail’ to make it acceptable by the publisher.  Club Photos: I still do not have photos of Cypremort, Long Beach, Navy, Ocean Springs, Texas Corinthian and Davis Island.  I have emailed, snail mailed and called, so if you have any pull with these clubs please help me get a photo.

 Some specific photos I’d like to have are:  2018 Knost and Jr. Lipton, MS coast clubs after Hurricane Camille, FL clubs after Hurricane Ivan, Opti championship hosted by GYA club (year doesn’t matter, mark rounding and/or starting line), other junior events hosted by GYA clubs.

 In Memory of/In Honor Of:  A number of people have indicated to me they or their club would like to include someone on these pages but have not submitted anything.  If you or your club plan to feature someone, I need the information and photo.  Details can be found on the Submission Form on the GYA home page.   

 THE DROP DEAD DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS OF ANY TYPE IS SEPT. 10 !!  Submissions may be emailed to cbook@gya.org   I will also be at the Lipton Challenge this weekend to accept submissions. If you bring photos for me to scan, please have them in an envelope with your name & address so I can return them to you.

Congratulations to Marcus Eagan, Andrew Eagan, and Jackson Benvenutti (Mandeville, LA) for winning both the Goslings 2019 Viper 640 World Championship and the 2019 Viper 640 North Americans. Hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (Long Beach, CA), the four-day Championship consisted of 13 races in atypical Long Beach conditions – light, 8-10 knots except for the final race on Day 2 and the last two on the final day when winds were mid to high teens. It was a regatta where sailors were faced with a wide range of conditions and those atop the podium had to be capable of dealing with them all.

Eagan ended with 33 points after five of the races atop the 41-boat fleet. In second was Geoff Ewenson (Annapolis, MD), Ryan Cox, and Jon Ziskind with 44 points having won an extremely consistent series with 11 top-ten finishes. In third, from South of Perth Yacht Club in Western Australia, were former Viper 640 World Champions Nick Jerwood, Brian DeVries, and Matt Jerwood.

The real story about this regatta was the blend of sailor experiences both on and off the water. The sailing, despite many light-air races, was keenly competitive; but it was the blend of great racing and spectacular on-shore activities that made the Goslings 2019 Viper 640 World Championship the event it was. ABYC volunteers, Goslings rum, and the full cadre of Viper sailors came together every morning and evening to deliver a bucket list event.
