Sail Button Purchase and How to Register Sails – Viper 640 International Class Association

Please familiarize yourselves with this information:  https://www.viper640.org/class/sail-button-purchase-and-how-to-register-sails/ . There were several Vipers at the Jr. Lipton Challenge that did not have the proper sail registration buttons on their sails. This could potentially be an issue for this weekend’s Knost Regatta and Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge.

GYA 100th Anniversary Book Request

There have been many notable sailors in the GYA – those who have won national and world championships, and who have qualified and/or gone to the Olympics – Marcus Eagan, John Dane, Zak Fanberg, Ricky Welch, Jackson Benvenuitti, Amy Kleinschrodt, Anne Edwards – just to name a few.  We’re hoping to include in the 100th Anniversary book a chapter on our notable sailors.  I have information on some of the sailors from way back – Gene Walet, Buddy Friedrichs, Gilbert Gray, Andrew Labano, and others – but very little or no information on recent (as in from about 1950 to date) sailors. IF THERE IS SOMEONE IN YOUR CLUB (past or present) WHO SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS CHAPTER OF THE BOOK, I need: their name, a sailing resume (from which I can pull the information needed) and, where possible, PHOTOS (either a head shot, a shot of them on the water at an event).  You can send the information to me or have the individual send it to me via e-mail at cbook@gya.org

We seriously don’t want to overlook anyone, but we need your help!!  Please do not assume I have the needed information on any individual. To the contrary, please assume I have nothing on anyone.  I would much rather have too much information from which to choose as opposed to not enough.

If you need to send original photos to me because you don’t have scanning capabilities or for whatever reason, I PROMISE TO RETURN THEM TO YOU! Mailing address is:  506 Trace Crossing, Daphne AL  36526

 Many thanks,

Cathy Cromartie

DONATIONS FOR US COAST GUARD DURING THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

Southern Yacht Club and the United States Coast Guard have had a mutually beneficial relationship for many years; we are asking you to help our friends who watch out for us when we are on the water.

Due to the government shutdown, Coast Guard families are struggling financially. Since many are young, with small children and living paycheck to paycheck, they are in need of basic household supplies, food and gas. As a community we would like to ask all SYC members to consider donating funds so that we can purchase gas and grocery gift cards for the Chief Petty Officer’s Association (CPOA) to distribute to our local Coast Guard servicemen and women.

The Southern Sailing Foundation has generously agreed to help us by setting up a page on their website dedicated to collecting funds for this worthwhile cause. 100% of the contributions earmarked for the Coast Guard will, in turn, be used to purchase the grocery and gas gift cards.

Thank you for your support of our local Coast Guard families who are responsible for protecting our coast and aiding in water rescue for the Southern Yacht Club. If you have any questions, please contact Elizabeth and Craig Ehrensing at coastguardfundraiser@southernsailingfoundation.org

On behalf of the SYC Board, we want to thank Elizabeth and Craig for leading this effort, know that we fully support it and will be contributing to this important cause.
