Judges Program

GYA Judges Program

The GYA as a Regional Sailing Association within US Sailing, the governing body of the sport in the United States, relies on the US Sailing Race Official Certification Program for the proper training of GYA Race Officials. The current certification program stated in 1998 and includes Race Officers (the people who run the races) Judges, Umpires, Classifiers and Measurers and Equipment Inspectors.   The purpose of the program is to ensure quality, integrity and consistency for all participants in the sport of sailboat racing. There are three levels of certification for Judges in the United States; Club Judge, Judge and National Judge. The program is described in detail on the US Sailing web site at https://www.ussailing.org/competition/rules-officiating/judges/programs/  The GYA regularly schedules and advertises both Club Judge and Advanced Judge Seminars for anyone interested in becoming a judge.

Regulation 5.2 in the GYA Bylaws encourages the use of certified judges at all events and requires a certified judge at six of the GYA Championship events. There are numerous certified judges within the GYA.  The best source for finding a certified judge is the US Sailing Web site.
https://www.ussailing.org/competition/rules-officiating/resources/find-a-race-official/   Judges can be sorted by state and level of certification. Contact information is provided.

In addition to the certified judges listed on the US Sailing web site there is also a listing of judges in training or JITs. JITs have passed the Club Judge test within the last four years and are in the process of becoming certified. Using these people at events helps them with the certification process and is needed and encouraged.  For additional help and support with judges or any questions or issues with the judge program please contact one of the following:
